Prāṇa and Rayi — Energy and Matter Are Not Two
An Ancient Indian Inquiry Viewed Through Modern Scientific Understanding
What is this universe made of?
Look around us.
We see human beings, animals, plants, mountains, oceans, planets and stars. Everything appears different.
Different names. Different forms. Different properties. Different functions.
But beneath all these differences, is there a fundamental unity?
This question is not new. It is one of the oldest questions explored by the sages of the Indian Knowledge System.
One profound expression of this inquiry can be found in the Prashna Upanishad, through the concepts of Prāṇa and Rayi.
Prāṇa — Energy
In Vedantic and Yogic understanding, Prāṇa is the dynamic principle of life and existence.
It is the principle of movement, activity and vitality.
For the purpose of a simple modern understanding, we can express this idea as:
Prāṇa — Energy.
Energy is what enables movement and transformation. Without energy, there is no activity, no process and no manifestation of the dynamic universe as we experience it.
In Yogic science, Prāṇa is not merely the air we breathe. Breath is one of the ways through which Prāṇa is expressed and regulated, but the concept of Prāṇa is much broader.
It represents the vital and dynamic principle operating within life.
Rayi — Matter
Alongside Prāṇa, the Prashna Upanishad speaks of Rayi.
Rayi can be understood as the material or manifest principle — that which takes form.
Therefore, in a simple contemporary formulation:
Rayi — Matter.
The physical world that we see and experience can be contemplated through this principle of manifestation.
Our bodies.
Trees.
Rocks.
Water.
Planets.
Stars.
All appear as matter in different forms.
Two Principles — But Are They Really Two?
Now comes the fascinating question.
If Prāṇa is energy and Rayi is matter, are they fundamentally separate?
To our senses, they certainly appear different.
A stone appears to be a solid object. Energy appears to us as movement, heat, light or other forms of activity.
But modern physics has shown us something profound about this relationship.
Einstein and the Equivalence of Mass and Energy
More than two thousand years after the Upanishadic period, modern physics developed a radically deeper understanding of matter.
Einstein's famous equation is:
E = mc²
The equation expresses the equivalence between mass and energy.
Mass is not an entirely separate physical reality from energy. They are deeply connected.
Under appropriate physical processes, mass can be converted into energy, and energy can contribute to mass.
The rest-energy corresponding to one kilogram of mass is approximately:
9 × 1016 joules.
Think about that for a moment.
A one-kilogram object appears to us simply as a piece of matter.
But associated with its mass is an enormous amount of energy.
The distinction between matter and energy is therefore not as absolute as our everyday experience suggests.
The Upanishadic Insight
Now return to the ancient question.
The Prashna Upanishad gives us the conceptual pair:
Prāṇa — Energy
Rayi — Matter
Modern physics gives us:
Energy ↔ Mass
These are not the same scientific theory. The Upanishad did not write Einstein's equation. It did not formulate mass-energy equivalence mathematically.
But the comparison opens a remarkable field of contemplation.
The ancient Indian inquiry was already asking us to think about the relationship between the dynamic principle and the material principle.
Modern physics has mathematically demonstrated a deep equivalence between mass and energy.
Different languages. Different methods. Different historical contexts.
Yet both invite us to question the apparent separation between form and force, matter and energy.
Matter Is Not the End of the Story
Imagine holding a stone in your hand.
It feels solid. It feels permanent. It appears completely different from energy.
But physics takes us deeper.
Matter is not simply an isolated, solid entity. It has an internal structure. It is made of atoms and subatomic systems, and modern physics describes nature through deeper relationships between fields, particles, mass and energy.
What appears solid to our senses is part of a much more subtle physical reality.
Our senses show us the form. Science investigates what lies behind the form.
Vedanta asks an even deeper question:
What is the ultimate reality underlying all forms?
From Prāṇa and Rayi to Brahman
This is where the Vedantic inquiry moves beyond matter and energy themselves.
If matter is Rayi and energy is Prāṇa, then we can ask:
What is the basis of both?
What is the reality in which both appear?
What is the source of all manifestation?
What remains when names and forms change?
Vedanta points toward:
Brahman.
Brahman is not simply another form of matter.
Brahman is not simply another kind of physical energy.
In Advaita Vedanta, Brahman refers to the ultimate reality underlying existence itself.
Therefore, we should not reduce Brahman to the scientific concept of energy.
Energy is a measurable concept within physics. Brahman belongs to a fundamentally deeper philosophical inquiry into reality.
The Ocean and the Waves
There is a simple metaphor that can help us understand this.
Imagine an ocean.
Thousands of waves appear on its surface.
Each wave has a different shape. Each has a different size. Each appears to have its own identity.
But every wave is water.
The wave arises from the ocean.
The wave exists in the ocean.
The wave finally returns to the ocean.
The forms are many. The substance is one.
This is the spirit of Advaita:
Many forms.
Many names.
One underlying reality.
Why Does This Matter to Us?
This is not merely an intellectual discussion about physics or ancient texts.
It has a practical message for human life.
When we see ourselves as completely separate from nature, we exploit nature.
When we see ourselves as completely separate from other people, division grows.
But when we begin to understand interconnectedness, our way of living changes.
We develop greater respect for life.
Greater respect for nature.
Greater compassion for other beings.
And a deeper responsibility toward the world around us.
Vedagramam — Scientific Spirituality
Vedagramam approaches spirituality without demanding belief.
We do not say:
“Believe this because it is ancient.”
Instead, we say:
Study it. Question it. Understand it. Reflect upon it. Experience it.
This is the spirit of Scientific Spirituality.
Vedagramam is not a religion. It is not built around religious identity.
It is an exploration of the Indian Knowledge System and its relevance to the modern human being.
We respect the discoveries of modern science. We respect the profound inquiries of the ancient Indian sages. And we explore the dialogue between the two without forcing one to become the other.
One Universe — Many Expressions
Let us return once again to Prāṇa and Rayi.
Prāṇa — Energy.
Rayi — Matter.
Matter gives us form.
Energy gives us dynamism.
Modern physics reveals a profound relationship between mass and energy.
Vedanta asks us to look beyond both and investigate the ultimate reality in which all these manifestations arise.
This is not about proving an ancient scripture with a modern equation.
It is about recognizing the extraordinary continuity of one of humanity's greatest quests:
What is the reality behind everything that we see?
The Thought for Today
Dear friends,
Today, remember just two words:
Prāṇa — Energy.
Rayi — Matter.
What appears to be two may be deeply connected.
What appears solid may have a deeper reality.
What appears to be many may arise from an underlying unity.
And the Vedantic journey takes us one step further:
Beyond the many forms,
beyond the changing manifestations,
seek the one reality underlying them all.
That is the spirit of Advaita.
That is the spirit of inquiry.
And that is the spirit of Vedagramam Scientific Spirituality.
